When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, Joy & Survival (From Siberia with Love Book 1), is such a book.Author Ilana Cohen weaves an intense tale of bitter-sweet romance, mystery, and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that easily captivates the reader's attention from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out!
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on an entrancing journey!
It’s one of those books that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the Romance genre will love having a nibble on this one!
I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Ilana Cohen in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. Five stars from me.

This was a great romance novel and a quick read. It would be perfect as a beach book.
I totally got swept away by Edith and Alex’s romance and by the backstories that went with each character. I like that fact that they both had some serious flaws and the author admitted that!!!
The ending of the book was bittersweet.
Would I read it again? Yes
Would I reccomend it to family and friends? Yes.
Interesting story about two people who, I can't say fall in love because that isn't loving, but let's say, who find each other attractive. Both believe it's love, or at least, the female character, Edith, does.
The book starts with Edith and her first out-of-marriage love. He is married too, older and helps her to find a job and leave the house and kids. Now when she is free after 10 years in prison (her words), being only wife and mother of two kids, locked in a house, she can feel the freedom. The guy who let her free dies the same day, Edith mourns him, and then she continues to explore life.
Alex becomes a part of her life and at first, he doesn't become her lover. He vanishes from her life and we can follow his life back from Siberia, where he came from, till nowadays. He lives with wife, kids, and family, he works a lot, and he saw lots of things in his life. For Edith, it's something exotic, the way he treats her. But, honestly, that's not the way anyone should treat a woman.
All in all, strange story. Edith is s naive, even she becomes a widow and has two grown up children. But somehow, you become attached to her. And want to know what happens next.
I first read Mystery & Survival (the second book in the series) before I read Joy & Survival. I do recommend starting with the first book, as it will all make more sense that way. However, I still enjoyed book two without having read book one first – but now I’ve read the first book, I enjoyed the series even more.
Anyway, on to the story. After the death of her husband, Edith dedicated herself to her work. She doesn’t know what else to do, and she’s not really interested in dating anyone. That is, until she meets Alex.
Alex is a brilliant scientist of Russian origin. He’s charming and enigmatic, extremely wealthy, and also very confident. He seems like the perfect catch. One problem, though. Alex is already married.
As Alex shares his story of his childhood growing up in Siberia with Edith, a near stranger, the two of them form a connection that might prove unbreakable.
Edith is a tough character to like, first because she falls for a married man, but also because she’s very naive. However, that part of her is also endaring, and it made me feel sorry for her more than anything. The back stories of both main characters were fleshed out and interesting, and I liked that, it gave them dimension and personality.
Having already read the second book, I knew a little of what to expect, but I was still pleasantly surprised at times.
