I came to expect fun low angst stories with charming quirky characters from this author and in this sense this story, the town portrayed in there and people living there did not disappoint. It was charming and fun.Love story however did kind of disappoint me not because I did not like the guys together, I did! It just happened way too fast for my liking and I am not even talking about Insta! Love. Nope, they may have been attracted to each other pretty fast but I did not think that they developed ever lasting love from the early pages. How to explain this? I feel like this story skipped some important beats I think. Once again why I am not particularly keen on reading novellas even from my favorite authors. Here is the well done beginning and now they are moving in together and in the epilogue they are getting married? Where is the developing relationship stuff?

Avon Gale does it again! I've enjoyed her humor since Let the Wrong Light In, but that one was a little dark for me. Lane in Breakaway was too annoying to enjoy that novel to its full potential, but, wow, since the second Scoring Chances book, I have been a huge fan and Gale is now an auto-buy. Her hilarious dialogue and internal monologues, the sexy but flawed main characters, the terrific supporting casts, and steamy love scenes can't be beat. I loved how she brought Kentucky to life in this book, as much as she brought Adam and Ryder to life. My only complaint - I wish this book was longer! Here's hoping there's more Ryder, Adam and Kentucky in the future...
Coming off the high of reading a 5 star, I was expecting this to be full of fun witty banter and some hot chemistry. Unfortunately, I was let down. Now it might of been just me but I couldn't get into it at the beginning. I was easily distracted and had to keep reread it over to make sure I was absorbing what I was reading - kinda like studying for a test. Boring.
Don't get me wrong, some of the puns they were coming up with was funny but that was about it in the enjoyment factor.
I felt like there were some loose ends, like what did they house name get changed to and what did two cups mean? I think I would of like to of seen more really. Even though this book was a fail to me, I have now been introduced to Avon Gale's writing and back catalogue which is my next port of call.
My Review
This is a quick read that provides a fun little distraction for a couple of hours.
Ryder is the owner of Hanged Man Bourbon, a small company that's been in his family and this small town for generations. Unfortunately, the small town is dying so Ryder is trying to revive it through his company. He's been searching for a larger bourbon company to buy the recipe so that both the company and town can get an infusion of new tourists.
Adam is employed by the company who bought the recipe. He's in Gallows Grove to determine if they can leave production of Hanged Man Bourbon there or need to move it to the larger company in Lexington. His presence can determine everything about Ryder's hopes and dreams. On the surface, Adam is a very reserved, staid man, but that's just what he's trained himself to be. He grew up in a family that's all the same. They certainly don't approve of him being gay or flaunting it. It's expected he marry (a female) and then carry on his deviant lifestyle through lovers...as is the family way.
Coming to this irreverent little town is the perfect remedy for his life.
Like I said this was a fun little book. The entire town is built on puns about death. To add to the levels of craziness, the only place for Adam to rent is a tiny room in the top floors of the funeral home where he shares his space with a room full of creepy dolls and a possessed ticking clock.
The book is irreverent and a tad zany, but I liked that about it. I also liked watching the relationship between Ryder and Adam develop and evolve.
I can't get enough of Avon Gale, she never lets me down - not even with a Novella. I was so excited for this story, I liked the premise and her stories have what I am looking for, great MC's with full, enjoyable personalities. A real story, great side characters, no BS extra conflict just for nothing. Real character connection, wonderful and hot sexy moments. Although this was short I felt all of it, this one had great humor, she is a Deserved Favorite of mine. I am looking forward for many more of her books. Highly recommended.
Ryder runs a distillery in a small town with a quirky name and history. He needs to make a deal with a distributor though, because the previous distribution methods are drying up. That's how he meets Adam. It's adorable how everyone in Gallows Grove is so supportive of Ryder. And he and Adam together are hot AND hilarious. The puns for businesses in Gallows Grove are hysterical. I honestly found myself marveling at how this author's imagination works and where these clever ideas come from. If you're a fan of extreme creativity, you will love this book.
The location of this story is so important that it actually feels like a character. The speech habits and accents matter. The basketball culture/UK fans, including their intense dislike of Duke or Louisville were featured. The backbone businesses of whiskey and horse breeding were important.
I have decided Avon Gale is an auto-buy author for me. I preordered this book as soon as I saw it on . The writing is always solid and error free. Plots are interesting, with some complexity. The characters talk to each other like adults unless they are PURPOSELY being childish. And then it's generally hilarious. The romantic moments are sweet and/or steamy. If it's a hockey story, the hockey knowledge is deep and wide (and as a hockey fan, I like that). The book Whiskey Business hit all the above points, except hockey. There's no hockey in this story. ).
